One of things I love to work on is myself and my idea of my identity. Plenty of times we create blockages for ourselves unconsciously. Simply because we define ourselves based on the patterns of our family members that we copy without awareness. And when we repeat this for long enough, it becomes a part of our subconscious. Hence members of a family display set mannerisms, both good and bad. We have something called hereditary diseases and temperaments too. Our ideas of self stem from belonging and attachments in various forms like race, religion, economic status, gender, orientation, profession, likes and dislikes, etc. However, change is the only constant. And therefore, our identities are also fluid. Accepting change as the most important variable in the story of life is pertinent.
Another important factor lies in awareness. And awareness is possible only when one is open, has a growth mindset and has an open door policy to welcome new ideas. Once aware, we can claim our own power and responsibility for our own growth, happiness, success and ultimately liberation. Letting go is the most difficult thing one can practice. Unlearning that which does not serve us is another difficult thing to do.
Understanding what can change results in our life is critical for change and progress. And this does not happen overnight. We may need to spend some time practising mindfulness in order to understand ourselves, our patterns, where they come from, and how to release ourselves from that which is harming us.
P.S. Taking responsibility for one’s own happiness is the bravest step one can take. It is easy to blame parents, situations and others for one’s own problems. It takes courage to acknowledge where we are going wrong and take corrective action. Breaking age old patterns is challenging. But not impossible. It all begins with awareness! Similarly, idea of identity is fluid. Exploring it throughout life is the best way to understand oneself.
